Self Introduction

Hi! I am new to the IE program although I have been teaching in Japan for about 30 years, primarily at the college level. In particular, I enjoy teaching writing. I am from Minneapolis, Minnesota, in the U.S. However, I have lived more than half of my life outside of this area. I had the good fortune to be able to travel to 25 countries and also live one year with a family in France, which influenced my future studies. My undergraduate studies were family relations and intercultural communications at the University of Minnesota. I met my Japanese husband there, and we moved to Japan one year after getting married. My Masters degree is in English Education from Temple University in Tokyo.

Message to Students

Students often tell me that they want to live or study abroad to improve their English. I think it’s a great idea as I had the opportunity to do so, but it’s not always possible. Since coming to Japan, I found that most towns have an International Friendship Association. It is a great place to use English and meet with people from Japan and other countries, so I advise my students to join one in their local area until they have a chance to go abroad. Of course, the Chat Room on campus offers this experience too!
