Self Introduction
I was born in New Zealand and studied English Literature at Otago University, going on to teach there and later at The Open Polytechnic of NZ in the Communication department. I have been teaching at universities in NZ and Japan for almost 20 years now. I have presented and published over a wide range of subjects, from literature to language learning and teaching to media studies. My recent research looks at discourses of national identity in Japanese television advertising.
Message to Students
University study is not just about learning skills, whether in language or analysis. The most important reason for studying at university should be to interact with new ideas, new ways of thinking, and new people. Question everything, whether established knowledge assumptions or your own opinions!
